Statistics: From January to July 2023, China’s utility model patent grants decreased by 26.62% year-on-year, while invention patents increased by 9.49% year-on-year
Recently, the China National Intellectual Property Administration (known as “CNIPA”) released the main statistical data report on intellectual property for January to July 2023. Compared to the same period in 2022, the number of granted invention patents increased by 9.49% year-on-year, utility models decreased by 26.62%, and design patents decreased by 11.12%.

1. Patents
From January to July 2023, China granted 515,000 invention patents, 1.254 million utility model patents, and 383,000 design patents.
As of the end of July 2023, the total number of valid invention patents in China was 4.641 million. Of these, the number of domestic invention patents (excluding Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan) was 3.679 million. There were 11.545 million valid utility model patents and 3.033 million valid design patents.
From January to July 2023, CNIPA received 40,500 PCT international patent applications. Of these, 37,600 were submitted by domestic applicants.
From January to June 2023, Chinese applicants submitted a total of 957 international design applications. From January to July 2023, a total of 837 international design applications designating China have been published.
2. Trademarks
From January to July 2023, China received 4.105 million trademark applications, and 2.396 million trademarks were registered. As of July 2023, there were a total of 44.537 million valid registered trademarks.
From January to July 2023, the Administration received 3,536 international trademark registrations under the Madrid system from Chinese applicants.
3. Geographical Indications and Integrated Circuit Layout Design
From January to July 2023, China approved the protection of three geographical indication products. 117 geographical indications were approved for registration as collective or certification trademarks, and 4,202 entities were authorized to use the exclusive geographical indication signs. As of July 2023, a total of 2,498 geographical indication products had been approved, with a cumulative total of 7,193 geographical indications approved as collective or certification trademarks, and 25,912 entities authorized to use the exclusive geographical indication signs.
From January to July 2023, China received 6,616 integrated circuit layout design registration applications and issued 5,671 certificates.
